God is the G in my GPS
Back to our end of season last camping trip. It seems like a long time ago now since the weather has turned so much drastically colder. I had friends, tons of friends who went camping last weekend in everything from tents to cabins, Halloween camping apparently is BIG here, or maybe we got in on this cool new fad all together this year, yup that's me a trend setter. Well I would not have gone this past weekend, it warned up to the high 40's for the kids soccer games. No thank you I do not want to camp in that. Well I suppose a nice cabin with heat and hot tubs I could make an exception.
But now two weekends ago it was nicer and much warmer even the tiny bit further up north we went, still had beautifully perfect weather. Of course this is the day after the nor'easter that set us back and caused us to go a day later. I had planned the whole thing around the campground's Halloween activities. We went there so the kids and us could spend time together having Halloween fun. Sadly with such busy life even though I spend a lot of time with the kids it is not always "enjoying them" time. I might be having fun watching them at their soccer games but it is just me bouncing between 2 games with the tiny team in tow trying to keep those little ones from crying and running on the field with the knowledge that as soon as this ends we have to pack up find affordable quick food that is not fast food so we can make it to baseball, I can't say it is enjoyable, not unenjoyable but not "enjoying them" time. Since it was Columbus day everyone had at least 1 extra day off and both boys had bys for their soccer games. This would be time for us to get away and enjoy them. Play with our children, create memories with our children and not worry about outside stresses of work, school and sports.
Since we arrived a day late and got lost getting there we missed most of their activities. I was disappointed but I would not let that ruin our trip.
But first let me tell you about getting lost. Because the Lord reaches out to those who are lost and has for me many different times. This campsite was not hard to find it was just straight up the highway and follow another one left along the river to the campground. Sounds easy and I was familiar with both these highways it should be just over an hour of easy driving for our caravan. We have to take so much stuff for 7 people that we always have to take 2 vehicles full. But one is usually pretty full of bikes, wood, coolers and a grill the other has to be full of the rest of so much stuff. (I hate all the preparing, packing, unloading, and washing that camping involves. It takes so much time and we ALWAYS forget something. This time it was marshmallows and chocolate, not to bad really. But try telling that to disappointed kids or realizing I had to pay 9 bucks for the forgotten items at the camp store) With a campsite so easy to find I gave Jay the GPS and said he could lead. We made it pretty far doing well but our turn was closed for a detour. The detour was a few exits up and once you took the detour turn there were no signs to say what else to do. We pulled over to a grocery store parking lot where he got out of the truck very upset, kicking tires, throwing a fit, saying that's it were going home blah blah blah. I am surprisingly good with directions. Not good with not speeding or filling up the gas tank but I usually can find my way. By the time we pulled into the grocery store parking lot we were well off the path. I said don't worry follow me. I used his phone and jotted down a few directions with paper and pen as the gps was of no help. It would not move beyond telling us to go on the closed road. I pulled out of the parking lot heading west as I knew I needed to be west of the Susquehanna and from what I jotted down I was looking for 7th street. I started going and kept going and never saw it. I kept going looking for any recognizable names from what I wrote down. I never saw any. But the whole time I was praying. Please Lord get me there. Don't let this not happen. The kids need it, I need it, I need your help. I kept blindly driving. I even turned off the road at on point on to another for who knows what reason. I just felt that was the way to go. No signs looking familiar yet. Finally I hit the farm show complex I knew where I was and I knew how to get home. it would have been so easy to turn left and go home but I kept praying and just decided to go straight hoping it went the right way but having no clue. Left was home right was towards Hershey straight...fingers crossed!? Prayers. And what do you know we were on the second highway we needed to be on!!! I did it God did it. The G in GPS has a new meaning. Oh I was relived!
This whole fiasco added an extra hour to our trip and we left much later than expected. We missed the trick or treating, we missed the crafts, we missed the site decorating contest. But it was okay. The kids still decorated our campsite spooky how they wanted. I now had bags and bags of candy since we did not get to hand it out the kids were happy to eat it. And we did make it in time to see the golf cart parade, it was cool and they threw out candy at the kids.
We carved pumpkins we all relaxed and started enjoying ourselves.

I did not know there was a costume Halloween party that night but we had plenty of time to make it to that. And we did. I am so glad we did it was the second best highlight of the trip, first was Lake Tobias .
We arrived there all of us dressed up.
Me and the girls were bumble bees.

Faith even won for best costume!

She got a pink wand and a orange tutu/petiskirt as a prize. She was so happy. She was adorable. They all were her, my kids the rest of the camping kids. I am not saying she won because she was the perfect size for the prize. But I am happy for her.

Smiley was a rocket ship that refused to wear his costume most of the time.

Jay was waldo.

He made so many people smile and laugh at his costume. I think he had the best adult one.

Gregory was a guy from call of duty. I did not put face paint on him because I really did not want to have to deal with that while camping it would have been everywhere and Evan was a vampire.
They had the best time ever at the party dancing the night away.

When it was time to leave I had the hardest time dragging them out.

I had to promise I would take us back next year.

What a dancing troop I have.

Even baby cakes showed us her moves. She is such a JOY

Yup it was fantastic. So much fun. I was enjoying my kids, enjoying my family and having the time we were looking for.

Frankenstein school treats
With a storm upon us and Halloween (the real day) imminent we decided to make some favors for the boys classmates. I had not heard of either of their rooms doing a Halloween party. I just don't get it, that is such a fun part of being a kid, but I am guessing it is because of the hyper kid sugar issue. I had to bring the boys into school today anyways so I figured I would bring some Halloween, the teachers love my disruptions (very sarcastically!)
The boys actually both had 8 AM dentist appointments today. Yes I know it is Halloween, yes I know I will not be getting a mom of the year mug for this one but with how hard it is to get dentist appointments we take them when we can get them. Great check up no cavities! And my oldest will not be needing braces in the future!! The other four are to young to tell yet.
We did not stay home during the storm. It was not the big deal people were making it out to be. The first day we did a playdate and lunch. And the second day well....
I had planned to do a project/ treat for the AWANAS kids at church. Since babies are abundant in our house we have lots of baby food jars Ihorded kept. But with the HUNDREDS of children that attended our AWANAS program I still did not have enough. I asked the church and more bags and boxes of jars came in but still not enough. Plus my husband and I had both been looking for green candy to fill the jars with for months but could not find any. When we did it was green/sour apple flavor (yuck) or mints and kids are not to fond of that. Plus the green/ sour apple flavored jelly beans or liquorice that we did find we would have had to buy in such large amounts and we were not even getting bulk pricing for it, an it was ridiculous in cost.
But with the 2 days off for Frankenstorm we had time and and urge to craft. the boys love it and it keeps them busy. Knowing the schools strong avoidance to sugar I though we could just fill them with play-do. Why did I not think of this earlier for the AWANAS kids? Oh yeah because the go from 3 years to 6th grade and most 6 graders no longer play with play-do, I think?.
I looked up play-do recipes online and I had what is needed to make it so we went ahead with their project.
My crazy boys glued google eyes to 40 baby jars. 36 students make up their schools 1-3 grade, lower elementary. They are divided into 2 classes 1 of my boys in each one. Then just a few extra because you never know.

While the eyes dried we made the play-do.

Basic ingredient ratios:
5 cups flour
6 cups warm water
3 cups salt
7 Tablespoons vegetable oil
3 Tablespoon cream of tartar (optional for improved elasticity)
food coloring
scented oils or I used a packet of mulling spice since I had it
This made a lot of play-do. This is enough for 7 kids to have a nice amount but still barely enough to put an inch and a half in 40 jars.
Well I thought I had enough but as I pored the salt I realized I did not even have half a cup. I had to go out. I had to go out after the hurricane hit and I knew most everything was closed. Heck Walmart even closed. They never close. I went to the closet gas station which is a Rutters and if you know what that is it is one of those gas stations that also has a small convince store of whatever you might need for astronomical prices. But it was sold out. I wondered where else I could go? I did not want to drive all around from one closed place to another. I did not have that much time or gas. Plus as I ventured out I could see what had happened to my little town and it was severely flooded. I could not believe all my lucky neighbors who now have ponds on their property. But how many of them have pools in their basement like I do?
I thought about the local Amish market I bet they are open. They are always open unless it is Sunday Don't fool yourself if they can make money they will. They will be open. They probably did not even know the storm was coming. Nah, they do do get newspaper, because they can sell them. It was just another mile down the road so I went and yes they were open. I was able to get my salt and a few other items I did not even know I wanted but that looked good. And they laughed at me as I told them what I was doing. "kids driving you nuts Karen? Need something for them to do?" Aw shut up Amish girl. (She won't even know I wrote that about her!)

After you have everything you should have in the first place mix it all together over medium heat.

I saw a note that said if your dough is still sticky cook it longer. Mine was so I tried this and it seemed that it was starting to burning to the pan. So I gave up and just added more oil. Not the best idea either but at this point I was tired of our project.

Start stuffing it into the jars. Then to keep it from hardening I put a small piece of tin foil over the top. i thought it would be okay if a little silver showed it after all Frankenstein was a built monster. The boys drew on faces and then we covered the foil with a small piece of black fabric to look like his hair. To fasten it on and make it look like Frankenstein we took pipe cleaners and warped them around the lid of the jar and where the ends meet we twisted them to look like his blots. Our pipe cleaners were multi colored so that is kinda what they ended up with.

But I hope they were a hit with their friends.

Next year however we will try something different. And yes that is Santa in the background. We have been counting down since August. He is always watching!

Schools Out
Yesterday before it even started raining schools started closing one by one all of the schools and colleges around us started closing. In all the counties the schools are closed for two days. A nice unexpected 4 day weekend for most kids and people. However for me it is an 8 day weekend, yea baby! And you know why because I got this weeks homework finished and turned in BEFORE they canceled school. Because you know if you have work to do and it is not done there will be no snow day, or in this care hurricane day.
No the real reason I have had such a long break is because of Halloween. Every year I explain that here in PA we do not celebrate Halloween the 31st but the Thursday before Halloween. In the case Halloween falls on a Thursday they still will celebrate it the week before. It is the attempt to keep the children and the drunks off the road at the same time.
And lucky for us we got Halloween out of the way and done with before all this rain hit because many other surrounding areas have had to cancel Halloween. The boys picked out there costumes for Halloween.

Ugh I miss the days I could dress them. I wanted Gregory to be Wheres Waldo, he is really into that lately He is so tall and skinny it would have been cute. But he wanted to be the scream. You might know this scream costume from the movie scream but he does not. I assure you he has never seen a horror film he hates being scared. He thinks this scream is from Edvard Munch's painting The Scream.

Again I love my kids school. He is probably the only one around here that would relate the costume to art not macabre horror. But he still had fun making the blood run down the mask after all he is a 9 year old little boy.
Evan wanted to be a Ninja. Smiley wanted to be a monkey. And Faithy was a cute flower.

My little girly Grace well she was a pumpkin. I went through a couple costume ideas but as the day was upon us we went with pumpkin.

We meet up with our normal trick or treating crew to go out again this year.
Most of the kids have got to old to trick or treat or have themselves photographed in the group shot with the little kids. But as others grow up I have more babies that come in.

Only 2 of these are not my kids the Hulk and the black Ninja.
They had so much fun. Faith did not know what to think. She just put all the candy people were giving here wrappers and all in her mouth right away. By the end of the night she figured it out and trick or treated like a pro. She would toddle up the stick out her bucket and get a bunch of candy. Her and Smiley were just so cute they worked the neighborhood while people were giving candy to Faith he would go and empty the bucket. And they were so cute they got away with it ever time!

Aw my sweet, spooky, SUGAR HIGH boys. It was a hard night once we got home.

But they loved it, they love Halloween. I love seeing the kids dressed up. And I love this year it was not cold. It was really warm as a matter of fact, a beautiful night. And I loved we got to go. We got it in before the storm.

We are supposed to be without power for a couple of days so I will let you all know how we fared the storm when I can. But here is to hopping we don't lose it. I am not exactly fond of the idea of being stuck inside with 7 people with no power, no will, no light, no tv, no heat, no escape. We might live in Amish country but I don't want to live like one.

Happy Halloween
Halloween has come and gone here in my part of Pennsylvania. And that is good because today I am buried under more than half a foot of snow and it is still falling. I have mentioned this every year but I will explain our Halloween again. The local boroughs celebrate Halloween always the Thursday before the 31st. It is our way to keep the kids and the drunks off the road at the same time
Thursday it rained. It rained soaking rains all day. As I was getting the children dressed for trick or treating it was still raining. I thought lets still go but this might be a short night. It was a cold night too. However as we walked to our friends to join the gang the rain let up and it never started again.

We have been trick or treating with the same group for years since we moved here. I love the yearly picture. It is fun to see how big everyone is getting. Now some people are not in the picture each time but to keep that many people still and together is impossible. For instance Smiley is not in here. He was so fast.
But I did capture a few of him. This year he was spongebob. He loves spongebob. Gregory was the red power ranger. And Evan was a pirate. We always try to have a theme and this year they just started picking out costumes but the theme kind of came together as tv characters. :( not cutesy anymore. Hopefully next year I can have an awesome family costume.

Sadly because of the rain and quickness needed to watch smiley I did not get Faith in any of those picture but she was there. Can you guess what she was? I bet you are thinking princess but no. She was a little pumpkin. All my kiddos start out as pumpkins.

And with my friends daughter who is also a Faith. Olivia Faith but that's okay.

They loved getting the candy. Smiley did not understand not eating it as soon as he got it but he like trick or treating and his brother tried to help.

Faith did not trick or treat she just enjoyed her binky and bundled up for the ride.

This year had a big first too. It was the first year the boys carved there own pumpkins. With NO help from mom. I was there I supervised but they did it all.

They piced out or created there own design. Scooped out all the guts.

And worked hard at carving them.

I think they did a good job.

Gregory

Evan

I did not let Smiley crave a pumpkin nor was his big enough to carve but under the guidance of his brothers he painted one.

I think they came out great.

Now on to the next holiday and off to shovel snow. Happy Halloween everyone!
